Friction Disc, also known as a clutch disc, is a component used in the clutch system of a vehicle. It is located between the engine and the transmission and is responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the transmission, allowing for smooth engagement and disengagement of the clutch.
The friction disc consists of a flat plate made of a high-friction material, such as organic or ceramic materials. It is typically covered with a friction lining on both sides, which helps to grip the clutch plate and transmit power effectively.
When the clutch pedal is pressed, the pressure plate releases the clutch disc, allowing it to spin freely. This disengages the engine from the transmission, enabling the driver to shift gears or come to a stop without stalling the engine. When the clutch pedal is released, the pressure plate applies pressure to the clutch disc, causing it to engage with the flywheel and transmit power from the engine to the transmission.
Friction discs are designed to withstand high temperatures and pressures generated during normal clutch operation. However, over time, the friction lining may wear out, reducing its effectiveness and causing slippage or difficulty in shifting gears. In such cases, the clutch disc needs to be replaced to maintain proper clutch operation
